Chapter 15

It hadn’t been Michael or Lyric who had summoned Ambassador Victoria to the Skyroot manor house, it had been the household butler. Neither Michael or Lyric trusted the necromantrix, now that her semi-secrets were no longer secret between the three of them.

Michael still resented Lyric for not accepting his apology for his misdeeds. They were misdeeds but at the same time his heart had been in the right place.

Lyric was still angry with Michael for having stooped so low to attempt to save her life. Maybe she would have died, but she was certain she would have eventually recovered.

Neither thought about how good the sex with Virmala had been.

Neither would openly admit to others—or themselves—they were still in love with each other.

Michael and Lyric were in the manor’s formal sitting room. Michael forbade anyone from entering the master suite. Lyric felt she couldn’t stay in her bedroom. She was seated next to the chair where her mother had often sat when receiving guests and visitors of all stripes, some asking for favors, some seeking her counsel. She couldn’t compel herself to sit in her mother’s seat. Not now. Not yet.

Michael stood at the large windows, his hand on his sword’s pommel, looking outside at the slowly fading light. He told himself he was guarding Lyric from possible attack, though it was already accepted among his trio that Lady Skyroot had killed her husband, a servant girl, and then herself in a twisted series of events set off by her husband’s infidelity.

No one considered that it was the necromantrix Virmala Graeme Naxremis who had lit the match that had set the conflagration.

Virmala considered congratulating Lyric on her position as the new Lady Skyroot, but that seemed both bold and rude. She tried a different track.

“I’ve heard the news. You have my sympathies, Lyric.”

Virmala strode across the room, her arms outstretched, intending to kneel in front of her young lover and embrace her.

She stopped the moment Lyric gave her an icy response. “Vix. Ambassador Veronica. Necromantrix Virmala. What are you doing here?”

“No one uses that last epithet for me,” said Virmala, equally icy. “At least not here, not in Carrow.”

“Why? It’s who you are.”

“I am many things. As are you.” Virmala glanced at Michael who watched the two silently. They all exchanged looks, sizing up the situation. They were the vertices of a triangle, equally set apart.

“You didn’t answer my question,” said Lyric firmly. “What are you doing here?”

“I was ordered here by the queen.”

“She has no true authority over you.”

Virmala inclined her head to the side. “True. A member of your household staff thought that you could use counsel from a trusted outsider.”

Lyric snorted, an unladylike expression of her disgust, but it got the point across. Michael frowned so that he would not smile at the insult Lyric tossed at the other woman.

“You can tell the queen that you made your appearance,” said Sir Michael. “You can leave now.”

“Don’t presume to speak for me, Michael!” Lyric sharply reprimanded him.

A small smile tugged at Virmala’s lips.
